To add page numbering for the rest of your book – beginning with the first page of your first chapter – go to that page, which should already have a page number, and format the page number by right-clicking on it.

Change “Number Format” to Arabic numerals (1,2,3….), and make sure page numbering starts at “1.”

The first page of your new section should now have an Arabic number 1, and the following page should have number 2, and so on.

Whenever I tried deleting the page numbers for the first pages (title page, copyright page, dedication page, and table of contents), Word deleted page numbering from the whole book.

The only way I know to work around this is to make each page of Section #1 a new section by inserting a section break after every page – in place of a regular page break.

Making every page a new section makes it possible to keep it free of page numbers, even when the rest of the book (from the Introduction onward) has page numbers.

In fact, as soon as I inserted the section breaks at the end of each page of Section 1 (creating a new section for each of the four pages), the page numbers disappeared.
